I just finished reading Murder at the Opera: A Capital Crimes Novel, a murder mystery by Margaret Truman, the daughter of President Truman.  It is a pleasant, competently written story involving the murder of a young opera singer at the Washington National Opera.  The details about the opera world seem accurate.  The characters are believable but not extremely interesting.  A connection between the characters and Arab terrorists seems far-fetched, and the reasons for some of the killings (there turn out to be more than one) are not very clear.

I have no idea to what extent Margaret Truman, who is now in her eighties, may actually have written the book herself.  There have been rumors that her mystery novels are ghost-written.

At the website of the John Edwards campaign you can order a free "Support the troops. End the war." bumper sticker.

Or, if you're able to chip in $20 to cover production, shipping and handling, they'll also send you a "Support the troops. End the War." t-shirt.

"'This is not a black people's war. This is not a poor people's war. This is an oilman's war.'

"Gregory Black, a retired Navy diver who last year started the website BlackMilitaryWorld.com, said that quote sums up what he too hears from African-American veterans of Iraq.

"'African-Americans detest this war,' Black said yesterday in a phone interview. 'Everybody kind of knows the truth behind this war. It's a cash cow for the military defense industry, when you look at the money these contractors are making. African-Americans saw this at the beginning of the war and now the rest of the country has figured it out. It's not benefiting us in the least.'"

I watched the re-run of Sunday's episode of The Apprentice last night on a cable station, I think it was CNBC.  The teams had to design an ad for a new mouthwash, the ad to run as an insert in a Sunday newspaper.  I did think that the winning ad was the better of the two, but still I didn't think that the losing ad was so bad.  Tim Urban, the Harvard graduate, ended up being fired.

He recently teamed up with Grammy Award-winning producer Glen Ballard to complete his first album, Turning Home. Ballard describes the album—a collection of music composed and performed by Tim—as “a 30-minute journey through Tim’s unique world of music.”

"The Harvard Law Review is cited less and less in decisions by federal courts, in keeping with a trend across several major law reviews, according to a study published last month by staff at the Cardozo Law Review of Yeshiva University.

"The researchers found that the Harvard journal was cited 4,410 times in federal courts during the 1970s, but only 1,956 in the 1990s, and 937 so far in this decade—despite an increase in the number of cases brought to courts."--from an article at thecrimson.com

"According to an analysis by Polidata, a political data consulting firm, seven states are all but certain to lose at least one seat [in the U.S. Congress after the 2010 census]: Iowa, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Missouri, New York, Ohio and Pennsylvania. Another six states are all but certain to gain at least one seat: Arizona, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, Texas and Utah."--The Hotline
