October 22, 2004 Boston "Mayor Thomas Menino said he was considering banning alcohol sales near Fenway Park during the World Series, following rowdy celebrations of the Red Sox's league championship that turned deadly when a police officer shot a projectile into a crowd," says as Associated Press article. I think that the real problem is that police officers should not be shooting projectiles into a crowd.
"Epson America Inc. has
achieved another digital photography breakthrough with the introduction
of the EPSON R-D1 -- the world's first rangefinder digital camera. This
camera was introduced in Japan earlier this year and will now be
shipping in the United States in early November.
"The EPSON R-D1 marks a significant milestone in the industry by combining the classic feel and precision engineering of a traditional rangefinder camera with the latest digital technology. It is the first digital camera allowing photographers to use revered L- and M-mount lenses."--from a press release at mobilemag.com. Last night's fired Apprentice candidate Stacy Rotner has her own website. Like some of the other fired candidates, she is available for appearances and public speaking. She is willing to give a motivational talk on "Learning How to Ask for (and Get!) What you Want." Wasn't not knowing how to do that one of the reasons why she was fired? October 21, 2004 Samsung Electronics will begin selling a mobile phone equipped with a 5-megapixel digital camera to Korean customers. The multi-function phone stores almost 100 minutes of video, works as an MP3 player and offers mobile banking capability, reports Robyn Weisman for Wireless News Factor. October 20, 2004 Six second cousins of George W. Bush have launched a website, Bush Relatives for Kerry, "to publicize their sharp disagreements with Bush's policies," reports Sandeep Kaushik in the Boston Globe. October 16, 2004 "The New Yorker's Brendan Gill, who once visited the [Bush] family compound at Kennebunkport, told a . . . story about the Bushes and their disinterest in books. The writer, an insomniac, tried to find something to read late at night. After investigating the entire mansion, he could find only one book: The Fart Book."--from The Family by Kitty Kelley, page 275. October 15, 2004 Last night on The Apprentice, the two teams had to present a newly designed line of women's clothing at a fashion show for some buyers. It was no surprise that the women's team won. Maria was her team's leader, and she did a good job of minimizing the nonsense, partly by giving Elizabeth tasks that kept her aware from much of the group. The women picked a young man as their designer, and they all got along well together. John was the men's team's leader. They picked a designer named Ilsa, a rather bizarre woman with rather bizarre taste. Her clothes were ugly and made unusual use of seemingly (to me anyhow) inappropriate fabrics. Raj behaved strangely, annoying people and impeding the work. The women's sales were roughly three times the men's. Kevin and Wes had been in charge of determining the prices and evidently chose prices that were too high. John had paid no attention to the pricing aspect himself. He brought Kevin and Andy into the boardroom with him as potential candidates for firing. He had no good explanation as to why he hand not also brought Wes who priced the clothing with Kevin. Kevin is black and Andy appears to be Jewish. Wes is a blond guy, something of a hick. Was John consciously or unconsciously demonstrating some sort of bias? In any event, John was fired for his bad leadership. Steve Tilley writes at canoe.ca: "Just as an aside, being an editor on this show must rock. Because it allows you to have a clip of Maria saying the designs make her mouth water, and then follow it with a shot of her eating a hot dog in a way that suggests if the whole business/reality TV thing doesn't work out, she's got a promising future in porn."
"Have you been to Broadway lately? Everything's either been running for 100 years or it sucks," said Elaine Stritch in an interview with Nick Dussault for the Boston Metro. October 13, 2004 At the present, gawker can be found here. October 12, 2004 "I never saw how crazy women were until reality shows," writes Mark Patinkin, a viewer of The Apprentice, for projo.com.
Did something happen to gawker.com? When I try to go there, I get an "under construction" page.
Donald Trump’s September 30 lecture at the University at Buffalo’s Alumni Arena gets a negative review from Nicole Schuman at altpressonline.com. Pamela Day, recently "fired" Apprentice contestant has her own website, pamday.com. The full site release is coming soon, it says. She is available for speaking at or hosting events. October 8, 2004 Pam was fired last night on The Apprentice. "While she was a little bit weird and not exactly likable, she was probably one of the more competent players, and just ended up in the wrong place at the wrong time," writes Steve Tilley for the Edmonton Sun.
Student Life at Washington University, Saint Louis, says that
Sean Hannity won't fly on just any airplane. Thanks to
Jesus' General for
pointing out the article.
jibjab.com has a new video "Good to Be in DC!"
The topic "interesting statistics about
the world's depravity for 2004" is a niche on the internet waiting to be
filled. My June blog comes up third on Google for this search
term, but unfortunately provides no such statistics.
October 7, 2004 October 6, 2004 Former Apprentice contestant Jennifer Crisafulli has revamped her website somewhat. She is available for speaking engagements and appearances at parties etc. Her "About Jennifer" section still says: "Jennifer is now successfully selling multi-million dollar, high-end residential real estate in New York City." And her links page has a link to a page at the Douglas Elliman site that says: "I'm sorry there has been an error. Please try again."
gawker.com reports that Gotham magazine for October lists
Manhattan's 100 most eligible bachelors. Among the names on the
list are Clinton Kelly, Nicholas Perricone M.D., and Bobby Short.
October 5, 2004 The Apprentice has"given us the best it has to offer and now is becoming a parody of itself," says Elites TV. October 4, 2004 “’I expect to be compensated,’ says Apprentice co-star and long time Donald Trump legal advisor, George Ross, who apparently worked pro bono for the first two seasons of Trump’s very successful television venture.”—from article at prleap.com.
The Sunday New York Times appears
to have changed its Arts and Leisure section for the worse.
Instead of the two pages of very comprehensive listings of plays,
musical performances etc. in New York, there was only page with
relatively big print listing a few selected items, sort of like
something I'd expect to see in a more provincial newspaper, say in
Boston or Providence. I already wonder if the Sunday New York
Times is worth the $4.50 that it costs in Boston. If it is
going to be dumbed down for people who glance at pictures and can't read
more than two sentences without losing interest, I won't bother buying
it.
October 2, 2004 "If 'The Apprentice' women are any indication of who's playing in the real business world, I would say we ladies have a lot of catching up to do," writes Cassie Pence for Vail Daily.
October 1, 2004 "For the second time in two days, . . . 'Apprentice' contestant Jennifer Crisafulli was apparently fired Thursday -- this time from her real job -- for remarks she made on the NBC reality show. "An official with the Manhattan firm Prudential Douglas Elliman said Thursday that Crisafulli, a 32-year-old real estate agent with the firm, would not be welcomed back because of comments she made on Wednesday night's episode of 'The Apprentice.'" --from an article by Mark McGuire at timesunion.com. Some of her comments were considered anit-Semitic. They certainly seemed anti-Semitic to me. I'm not surprised that a real-estate agent would think anti-Semitic thoughts, since I imagine that racial, ethnic and religious steering is probably standard practice with some real-estate agents, but it can be stupid to articulate such thoughts, especially when being filmed for national television broadcast.
