February 15, 2005 "THE office of Prince Charles has rejected claims that his civil marriage to longtime love Camilla Parker Bowles will not be legal. "'Legal advice was taken from four different sources, and all agreed that it is legal for a member of the royal family to marry in a civil ceremony in England,' said a spokesman for Clarence House overnight. "A BBC Panorama investigation earlier reported there was confusion over whether the marriage at Windsor Castle on April 8 would be permitted under existing legislation. * * * "In the BBC1 documentary, Stephen Cretney, emeritus fellow of legal history at Oxford University, said he found it impossible to understand how a civil marriage for the couple in England could be legal." --from an Agence-France-Press article at news.com.au. February 14, 2005 "The BBC's Panorama programme has uncovered official documents which suggest that Prince Charles could be unable to marry Camilla Parker Bowles by civil ceremony at Windsor Castle," reports an article at http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/programmes/panorama/4262943.stm According to the documents which contain legal opinions from the 1950's and 1960's about possible civil marriage by a member of the royal family, the laws governing marriage by members of the royal family are different from those governing marriage for everyone else. The only way for a member of the royal family to contract a civil marriage is to be married in Scotland by a registrar at a registrar's office. It may be treason to be present at the civil marriage in England of a member of the royal family. February 7, 2005 An interesting book:
